What Knife Makers Need

Knife blade marking is about deep, durable marks — not color. High-carbon steel and tool steel require more aggressive settings than stainless, and the marks need to survive use and sharpening. For this: 30W minimum (30W MOPA is ideal — more power, flexible settings), and a work area that accommodates blade length. Most hunting knives fit in 175×175mm; longer blades may need a pass-through setup. Color marking on blade steel is possible but rarely needed. MOPA is still preferred because of the flexible power settings that help mark different steel alloys cleanly.
